Mr. Humphries began working for the Board of Education in February 1995.  He is a graduate of University of Michigan Law School (1984) and also earned his undergraduate degree from University of Michigan (1980).  He currently serves as the Interim Executive Director for Federal, State & Local Grant Development and Program Compliance.  He is responsible for the administration of The No Child Left Behind Act.  His department manages over $450 million in federal and state competitive grant funds.  He previously acted as general in-house legal counsel for the school district in all areas of civil litigation, legal counsel and advisement, resource management and coordination for departments that include Federal, State and Local Grant Development and Program Compliance, Student Transportation, Public Safety, Special Education, Student Code of Conduct, Employee Assistance Program, Medical Screening, Office of Human Rights, and ADA Section 504.  Mr. Humphries’ areas of expertise include general litigation; legislative, political, criminal and civil litigation; litigation management; contract management; educational law; and organizational transition development.

 

Mr. Humphries served in the legal department for the City of Dearborn, MI before joining our staff.  He was responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor criminal and traffic violation in the 19th District Court.  Prior to Dearborn, he served as an Analyst in the Detroit City Council Office of Research and Analysis.  He is a graduate of Chadsey High School, Detroit, MI.  He has a brother, Derrick, who is an attorney in Washington, D.C., and his sister is 36th District Court Judge Paula G. Humphries.  He is married and has 4 children and a grandson.
