Education Policy Fellowship Program

Assessing Leadership Styles

Fellows will debrief and interpret the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) and examine how different styles and behaviors can conflict with individual and organizational goals. We will examine the question of how personality preferences and types influence the meaning that we bring to the process of change and explore how different styles and behaviors can impact various work settings. In addition, we will explore current knowledge and conditions that support collaborative learning teams. Guided discussion will help participants consider some explicit supports and expectations that can help collaborative learning teams to improve organizational outcomes.

Dr. Barbara Markle is Assistant Dean of K-12 Outreach in the College of Education at Michigan State University. In this capacity she develops and implements programs for classroom teachers, school administrators and policymakers that translate educational research to application in schools and settings where education policy decisions are made. Dr. Markle’s public school experience includes service as a high school teacher, counselor, junior high principal, senior high school associate principal and director of curriculum. She also served as Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction in the Michigan Department of Education where she was responsible for Michigan’s education reform initiatives. She directs several state and federal grants, and has a deep interest in school reform issues centering on teacher leadership. Her Ph.D. is in educational administration from Michigan State University. She is the recipient of the 2003 National Leadership Award from the Institute for Educational Leadership, the 2006 Educational Leadership Award from the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association, and the 2007 Education Fellows Award from the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators.

Dr. Susan Printy is an associate professor of K-12 educational administration in the College of Education at Michigan State University. Her research interests center on schools as learning organizations, with particular focus on the leadership relations between principals and teachers and the use of data in promoting school improvement. Her current work examines the professional impact of social learning that occurs within high school teachers’ departmental communities. Dr. Printy's areas of expertise include school administration, data analysis for school improvement, educational leadership, organization theory and quantitative research methods. Susan earned her Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
