Initiated in October 1994, Michigan State University's State of the State Survey is the only survey conducted in Michigan designed to systematically monitor the public mood on important issues in major regions of the state. The survey provides current information about citizen opinions on critical issues such as education, the environment, health care, crime, giving and philanthropy, governmental institutions, and specific community concerns. Conducted quarterly, this survey is meant to provide non-partisan information to policy leaders, lobbyists, and advocacy groups.

Dr. Roberts has been a contributor to the Michigan EPFP for over 20 years. In addition to serving as the Director of MSU’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research, he has more than 28 years of experience in Michigan government, including senior executive roles as state treasurer, director of the Senate Fiscal Agency, deputy superintendent of the Department of Education, deputy director of the Department of Management and Budget (DMB) and acting director of DMB.

Kellogg Center, MSU

During this session we will explore what role advocacy plays in the policymaking process from the perspective of Michigan's Children, a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that support improved opportunities for children. The Fellows will hear from two veteran advocates for children's issues and learn how organizations create strategic alliances to impact the policymaking process. The second part of the program agenda is designed to advance the development of this year's EPFP Learning Teams.
