The Technology of Relationship Building

This seminar will focus on the behaviors, strategies, tools and resources that are essential for effective networking and for building successful collaborative relationships.  The participants will have an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the social, cultural and interpersonal skills that are employed by highly networked people.  A second part of the program will engage the participants in the new national EPFP Online Community resource that has been created to encourage networking and promote communication between and among current Fellows and program alumni.

John Heiss is the Manager of the Greater Detroit Network for Social Innovators, a catalytic network of entrepreneurs and social change agents who are engaged in the creation of earned income ventures with a double bottom line. It is the mission of the organization to nurture an environment of profitable, sustainable business enterprises with social impact in southeast Michigan, with a vision to develop a broad-based network of leaders focused on accelerating social entrepreneurship among individuals, businesses and institutions. This Network operates as a Peer Learning Network, Business Incubator, Venture Capital Marketplace, Policy Group and Resource Network. The banks, companies, non-profits and churches involved are committed to long-term, sustainable development. The Network pursues a merge for-benefit and for-profit model to “Make Detroit Better.”

Mr. Heiss has worked in the field of human care and human services for the past 25 years in Chicago and Detroit and has served as the Executive Director of three settlement houses. He has served as the General Manager of a Community Development Corporation in Harvey, IL and as a faith-based organizer for two national organizing institutes. He also worked for the IBM Corporation.  He earned both a BA and a MA from the University of Denver.
