Collaborating for Success - Parent Involvement in Policy Advocacy

Purpose: Provide an overview of parent involvement policies and engage the audience in processes that suggest the need/ benefits of parents collaborating with the community for their children’s education.

Sherita Smith currently serves as Policy Specialist for the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center | University of Michigan School of Public Health, leading an effort to engage parents and students as equitable partners in school systems change. With more than 15 years’ experience in community development, she has devoted most of her professional life to community revitalization in the city of Detroit as a leader, advocate, and consultant. Sherita volunteers extensively in service to youth and families in efforts to end generational underachievement and poverty, and to ensure all have access to a higher quality of life. Sherita resides on the east side of Detroit with her husband and four sons. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Wayne State University, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Linda Frederickson is Director of Sales, Marketing & Communication for the Michigan Virtual University. She oversees marketing, advertising, outreach, public relations, and sales activities for the Michigan Virtual School, Michigan LearnPort and the Michigan Virtual Learning & Research Institute. Prior to joining MVU, Linda held the position of Vice President, Sales & Marketing for the Lansing Entertainment & Public Facilities Authority for nearly 10 years. As a member of the executive leadership, she managed all marketing, advertising and sponsorship activities for the Lansing Center, Oldsmobile Park and City Market. Linda was part of the team that launched the Common Ground Music Festival in downtown Lansing. Prior to that, Linda was Assistant General Manager for the Lansing Lugnuts. Linda earned degrees in merchandising and accounting from Brooks College, Long Beach, California and Argubright Business College. She also chairs the marketing committee for the Metropolitan Board of Directors for the YMCA of Lansing. She is a 2010-11 Education Policy Fellow and a graduate of the ICSC Marketing I and II Institutes at Michigan State University.
