Education Policy Fellowship Program

Ethics, Values & Morality

The first part of this seminar will examine how ethics, values and morality impact leadership and individual behavior in both public and private sector organizations. We will examine how certain historical rules guide our conduct and lead each of us to make deliberate choices in our personal and professional lives. We will explore a number of contemporary examples of positive and negative ethical behavior and discuss recent attempts by leaders to instill new ethical standards in government, corporations and organizations.

Dr. Henry J. Hastings is currently the Acting Director of the Michigan Institute for Safe Schools and Communities, which is located in the College of Education at Michigan State University. The Institute, once fully established, will coordinate public and private efforts to create and maintain safe and drug-free learning environments that foster academic achievement, pursuant to the demands of the recently enacted No Child Left Behind Act. In addition to this responsibility, Dr. Hastings is a policy advisor to the Office of Drug Control Policy, an office within the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Dr. Hastings is an attorney and has a doctorate from the University of Michigan in Educational Foundations and Policy, with an emphasis in values, ethics, and morality in educational policy. For the past decade he has been an adjunct M.B.A. professor at Oakland University where he has taught the introductory business ethics course, The Legal Environment of Business, and a business ethics seminar. During the course of his professional career Dr. Hastings has been a high school teacher, an assistant juvenile court prosecutor in two of Michigan's largest counties, Wayne and Oakland, a guardian ad litem for neglected and abused children, and a successful businessman and practicing attorney. He has a keen interest in ethical issues and has had the opportunity to study with the then resident philosopher of the University of Michigan Medical School. As a result, he has an active interest in the profound ethical issues emanating from human genome research. He has assisted a prominent bioethics think tank, The Hastings Center (no relation!), plan and present a national and international bioethics seminar for leading scholars in the area of bioethics. Due to his broad and diverse background as an educator, lawyer, and businessman, he is an advocate of the importance of having a moral point of view, particularly when considering and developing educational policy and practice.

The Fellows will continue to work in Learning Teams on their scheduled presentations.
