Developing a Personal Mission Statement

& Year End Wrap-up

Throughout the past year the Fellows have gained insights about themselves in a leadership context. This session will provide an opportunity to reflect on these insights and "lessons learned" through the development of a personal mission statement as a leadership strategy. This is the final seminar for the 1998-99 EPFP class, and we will facilitate a year end wrap-up discussion and a formal program evaluation.

Stephen S. Kaagan has served since 1991 as Professor in the College of Education at Michigan State University. Previously he was a chief education officer (Vermont Education Commissioner, 1982-1988), academic head of a higher education institution (Provost, Pratt Institute, 1977-1982), and chief executive of a non-profit educational organization (President, Hurricane Island Outward Bound, 1989-1991). He has been a classroom teacher (Arlington, Massachusetts and Canberra, Australia) and has taught organization development and educational policy at Pratt Institute, Rutgers University and the University of Southern Maine.

Mr. Kaagan has a master's and doctorate from Harvard University and a bachelor's from Williams College, as well as honorary doctorates from Williams College and Green Mountain College.

He has consulted on team leadership development, strategic planning and organization development with government, business and non-profit organizations, and has written extensively on leadership, accountability of public organizations and the essential role of the arts in education.

University Press of America published his first book entitled Leadership Lessons: From a Life of Character and Purpose in Public Affairs in 1996. Sage Publications has just issued his second, Leadership Games: Experiential Learning for Organizational Development.

Resource People: Fellows and Coordinators

This session is designed to make connections between the Washington Policy Seminar, the Michigan Policy Forum and previous seminar discussions which focused on the policy making process. We will review examples of policy frameworks and examine a specific legislative proposal using one or more of the the policy models.

Nurture, Peer Pressure & Networking

Judith Rich Harris' book The Nurture Assumption has sparked a lively debate among experts in child development on the role which parents and peers play in socializing childern. In addition to discussing this revolutionary book, part of the presentation will examine how public discourse is accelerated and possibly enhanced by technology, for which the Nurture Assumption debate is but one example. The Fellows will also explore their own peer networks and assess their potential.

Patrick Dickson is a Professor of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at Michigan State University and Director of the Technology Exploration Center. He combines interests in human development, multimedia learning environments, and cross-cultural research. His teaching and research activities focus on applying lifespan developmental perspectives to the design of new learning environments. Through his work on technology advisory committees at the university, state and public school levels, he is engaged in the challenge of integrating rapidly evolving new technologies into schools, universities, and teacher education. He earned his Ph.D., at Stanford University.

He has taught in the MSU Graduate Studies in Education Overseas summer programs in Bangkok and Valbonne. He has also taught short courses on portfolios and assessment or technology at many international schools throughout Asia.

He is the Director of the Michigan State University Technology Exploration Center which opened in January 1995. This innovative center embodies key design principles aimed at providing a socially inviting and intellectually stimulating environment for learning about technology in education. http://www.educ.msu.edu/TEC/

During the past year he has been the director of the LETSNet Project, funded by a $500,000 grant from Ameritech, to create resources on the World Wide Web to support teachers learning to use the Web in K-12 education. http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/letsnet/

As a part of another research team with Carrie Heeter and David Stewart he has helped develop an award-winning CD-ROM Personal Communicator with American Sign Language in QuickTime on a PowerBook. http://commtechlab.msu.edu/CTLprojects/perscomm/

He is also a participant in an NSF grant to the Center for Microbial Ecology aimed at developing educational resources on the World Wide Web and CD-ROM to make work of the Center accessible to K-12, higher education and the public. He has three children, ages 13, 18, and 20. He has observed his own children's uses of the computer and other technology since his first child began playing with his Apple II computer when he was only 3 years old. (Andrew began study at Stanford University this fall in computer science.) His children and technology have become better, faster and more powerful with each passing year. He, unfortunately, seems to have remained about the same.

Problem Solving Simulations

Fellows experience assessments to better understand and practice the behaviors and skills that contribute to effective group problem solving and decision making in organizations. Through participation in these exercises, individuals experience how certain behaviors can positively or negatively affect the performance of a group working to solve a common problem.
